Paris Saint-Germain sign Lee Kang-in from RCD Mallorca

Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Lee Kang-in from RCD Mallorca for €22m (£18.8m).

The Athletic reported in June that the 22-year-old, who formerly came through the ranks at Valencia, was close to joining PSG.

That transfer has now been completed with the South Korea international signing a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 champions and he told the club’s website about his excitement to start this new chapter in his career.

He said: “It’s a pleasure to be able to join Paris Saint-Germain, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world, with some of the greatest players in the world. I can’t wait to start this new adventure.”

Lee joins the club having scored seven goals and provided ten assists for Mallorca in 73 appearances.

Also, since making his senior international debut in 2019, he has made 14 appearances for his country, providing two assists.

Lee Kang-in has the chance to replace Lionel Messi at PSG.

While PSG represents progress in Lee’s career, it is hard not to feel like the move would be somewhat plateauing. Ligue 1 is a phenomenal breeding ground for young talent, but PSG’s issues in recent seasons have been underpinned by a trio of world-class forwards who do little to no defending.

Lee is walking into arguably the most stacked attacking midfield/forward department in the world at a time when he needs minutes.

He completed 12 full 90s in the league last season — four times as many as his first three seasons — and ended the campaign with three goals and two assists in his final eight appearances.

He might play a bit like Lionel Messi, but now he has the chance to replace him.
